We’re big fans of walking. It’s fun, it’s free, it’s easy, and it’s good for you! Functionally, it’s a great way to get around, and, from a leisure perspective, often the only way to explore the many areas without road access.
With Summer here, there's never been a better time to lace up your sneakers and get out there!
Want to go on these walks but don't have a car to get you there? Fear not, Yourdrive has got your back with hundreds of privately-owned vehicles available to rent - directly from Auckland locals. You'll find a wide range of great-value vehicles in handy pickup locations across the city. Read on to bag yourself a sweet $20 discount on your first rental!
Here are our top 5 walks within an hour of the CBD
Te Araroa Trail: North Shore Coastal Walk
Cross the Harbour Bridge and explore the picturesque coastline of Auckland’s North Shore. The all-tide Te Araroa trail begins at Long Bay Regional Park and takes you around 10 different beaches, all the way to Devonport. Don’t forget to bring your togs and a towel so you can have a dip to cool off en route!
Tamaki Drive Walk
You likely drive along Tamaki Drive regularly but, have you walked the distance? The 10km walk is one of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of Auckland. Start at Queen Street and end at the quaint St Heliers Bay village experiencing stunning views of the city skyline and the Waitemata Harbour along the way. Be sure to stop for an ice cream at one of the many retailers in Mission Bay!
Church Bay Circuit: Waiheke Coastal Walk
Hop on the Fullers Waiheke ferry in downtown and head into the Hauraki Gulf. Start your walk at the Matiatia wharf (where you disembark the ferry), heading around the bay's Southern headland. Follow the coastal track to Te Miro Bay and then Church Bay before rejoining the road to Oneroa township. Pop into Mudbrick or Cable Bay Vineyard on your way along Church Bay Road and taste some of their award-winning wines!
Orakei Basin Walk
Once a flooded volcanic crater, the Orakei Basin is now an inner-city oasis. Following redevelopment in 2010, the basin now boasts a beautiful boardwalk that enables you to get close to wildlife and view people participating in water sports. We recommend grabbing a bite to eat or a beverage at one of the Orakei Bay Village establishments before catching the train back into the city.
Waikōwhai Walkway: Manukau Coastal Walk
Explore this scenic section of the northern shore of the Manukau Harbour! Along the walk, you will encounter secret coves, city parks, areas of native bush, cliff top suburbs, and plenty of lookouts – each with a unique vista of the ever-changing expanse of the Manukau Harbour. Follow the track along the shoreline two hours either side of low tide, or through a series of reserve tracks at high tide.
