1. Auckland - FishSmith at Sentinel Road Beach
Grab a feast from FishSmith and head to nearby Sentinel Road Beach to watch the sun go down. Although this bay is technically facing the wrong way for sunset, it’s still a stunning spot to enjoy a meal under the dusky pink sky. The Jervois Road outlet offers a fresh take on the classic NZ takeaway, with an emphasis on the fresh. Get a piece of fresh fish, cooked just the way you like it, with a side of chips or deviate from the traditional to try one of their delicious tacos or burgers.
2. Gisborne - London Street Fish Shop at Kaiti Beach
If you’re visiting Gizzy, you must swing by this hot spot for a feed. The swarm of cars outside and queues out the door around 7pm are a dead giveaway that you’ve struck gold. Grab a pack of the good stuff from the lovely ladies and head to nearby Kaiti beach to enjoy your meal with stunning views out to sea and the sound of crashing waves in the background.
3. Taranaki - Opunake Fish, Chips & More at Opunake Beach
This well-known kitchen has been serving up hand-cut chips and faultless fish since the 1960s. It’s so good it got a mention in Lonely Planet's 2017 Best in Travel awards! Unwrap your parcel at one of the perfectly positioned picnic tables along the shore of Opunake Beach and tuck in as the sun goes down.
4. Raglan - Raglan Fish at Raglan Wharf
If you’re craving generous portions of crispy chips and perfectly cooked breaded or battered locally sourced fish, then look no further than Raglan Fish. Enjoy your meal with your legs dangling over the edge of the Raglan Wharf while watching the tide surge in or out of the harbour.
5. Foxton – Mr Grumpys Takeaways at Foxton Beach
If you’re feeling grumpy, a meal from Mr Grumpys will be sure to turn that frown upside down. The menu here is extensive and incredibly reasonably priced. If you’re after the classic fish and chip pack, you’ll be able to feed a hungry clan for $5 per head. Take your tucker down the road to Foxton beach to enjoy your meal with added salt air.
6. Northland - Mangonui Fish Shop at Coopers Beach
Perched on poles cantilevering out over the water, this famous fish shop sells over 100,000 portions of locally line-caught fish to customers annually. While you are waiting for your meal to be prepared, gaze into the waters beneath the shop to spot stingrays, john dory, and kingfish swimming around. Once you've collected your kai, head around the coast Coopers Beach for a picnic on the picturesque golden sand beach.
7. Banks Peninsula - Akaroa Fish & Chips at Akaroa Beach
This place has a great reputation for a good reason! You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu but, we strongly recommend choosing the blue cod (accompanied by a side of chips, of course). Claim one of the outdoor picnic tables while you wait for your food to be cooked so you can dive into your meal fresh out of the frier while admiring waterfront views.
8. Kaikoura – Coopers Catch at Jimmy Armers Beach
The fish in the ocean near Kaikoura are hot in demand with lots of hungry humans and seven species of whale in residence! A combo from Coopers Catch will leave you full but, if you have a sweet tooth that needs satisfying, head to Poppy’s for a scoop of ice cream for dessert. Feel good as your feast knowing you're supporting a small town still recovering from the 2016 earthquake.
9. Cambridge - Queen Vic Chippy at Lake Karapiro
If you’re passing through the area around dinner time, divert off the Waikato Expressway and devour a feed from The Queen Vic Chippy. They offer all the usual suspects as well as classic British add-ons like mushy peas and homemade curry sauce. If you’re not in a rush to get back on the road, head to the shores of Lake Karapiro to watch the sunset reflect in the perfectly still waters.
10. Rotorua - Oppies Takeaway at Lake Rotorua
The typical image is fish and chips by the beach but, when you’re in the central North Island, and there are no beaches nearby, a lake will have to do. Take your pick from the extensive menu of fried foods and Chinese dishes at Oppies, place your order, and your meal will be ready in the blink of an eye. Head 5 minutes down Fenton Street to the waterfront to relax on the grass and enjoy your meal. If you have kids, there is a great playground here so they can burn off energy before hitting the hay.
