Peer-to-peer car sharing connects people who want to rent cars with people who have a car that's available to use. Car sharing is the more sustainable, cost-effective, and convenient alternative to car ownership and traditional car rental.

Yourdrive is Aotearoa's car sharing platform. On Yourdrive, you can rent cars, vans and campervans directly from real people throughout New Zealand. By renting from residents you'll find a wider range of better-value vehicles in dispersed locations. You'll also get travel tips and advice from a friendly local, and it’s better for the environment. Keep reading to find out how to rent a car through car sharing and how to get $20 credit towards your first Yourdrive rental!

1. Sign up

Joining Youdrive is easy and free, simply click 'Join' in the top right corner of any page. You can sign up for Yourdrive by creating an account with your email or by connecting your account with your existing Facebook account.

After you sign up, you will need to complete your profile and have it reviewed and approved before you can make bookings. To complete your profile, you must: verify your email address, provide your driver licence details and any required supporting documentation, and supply your phone number and home address.

2. Search

To find a suitable car, search for the location and dates/times you require via the Find a Car page. Use the filters to limit the results shown to just those that fit your criteria. You can filter by price, vehicle type, the number of seats, transmission and features such as tow-bar and four-wheel drive.

3. Select

You can find out more about vehicles you are interested in by clicking through to their listing pages. If you want to ask the owner a question before submitting a booking request, you can do this by clicking "Ask [owner name] a question".

4. Submit

Once you have found a suitable vehicle, you can submit a booking request and authorise payment. The owner will be notified of your request and be allowed 24 hours to respond. You will be notified of their response via email. If they accept, your credit card will be charged and the booking will be confirmed.

5. Pick up

Unless other arrangements have been made with the owner, the vehicle is to be picked up from its registered location at the start of the booking period. You'll receive this address and pick up instructions in the booking confirmation email. You can also find these details on the booking page under My Trips.

Regardless of whether you pick up the vehicle from its registered location or have it dropped to an alternate location, there is a handover procedure which must be followed every time.

  1. Show the owner your valid driver's licence so they can verify your identity. All registered drivers must do this.
  2. Perform a vehicle inspection with the owner, taking photos of the vehicle to verify its condition in case an incident occurs or a claim is submitted. For details of the photos you should take, see here
  3. Confirm the type of fuel the vehicle takes and ask the owner any questions you have about the vehicle.

6. Adventure

Hit the road and the enjoy the freedom to explore anywhere with the peace of mind that you're covered by Yourdrive's insurance (excess may apply) for the duration of the rental period. If you have questions or encounter any issues along the way, both the owner and the Yourdrive Support team are available to assist you.

7. Drop off

Before you return the vehicle to the owner, you need to replace fuel used and clean the vehicle, both inside and out, so that it’s in the same condition as when you collected it.

Usually, renters drop the vehicle off at the same location they picked it up from, the vehicle's registered location. This address is sent to you in your booking confirmation email but it can also be found on the booking page under My Trips. Some owners are happy to collect the vehicle from an alternate location but this needs to be prearranged.

Try to be on time for drop off. If you're running a little late, let the owner know. If you’re going to be dropping off significantly later than the booking end time, please follow the procedure to make a booking extension

When you return the car, perform another vehicle inspection with the owner taking more photos of the vehicle to verify its condition in the case of a claim. For details of the photos you should take, see here
