Explore the Local Produce at Matakana Farmers Market then take a tour on the Goat Island Glass Bottom Boat
Sachintana's pick for a great winter day trip from Auckland is the Matakana Farmers Market, followed by the glass bottom boat tour at Goat Island Marine Reserve, then a bite to eat at the Leigh Sawmill Brewery before heading home.
Auckland to Matakana - 1 hour
First stop on your day trip from Auckland is the Matakana Farmer's Market. Every Saturday morning, until 1pm, the market is a showcase of artisan producers, growers and farmers from the region. Here you can buy fresh produce, artisan baking and fine wines, all accompanied by live music - nestled on the banks of the Matakana river. You'll find the market tucked behind the Matakana Pharmacy. Parking on the main road is limited so turn down Torea Road and connected roads for more options.
Matakana to Goat Island Marine Reserve - 15 minutes
Head northeast along Leigh Road for the next stop in your day trip from Auckland. Goat Island Marine Reserve was New Zealand’s first marine reserve and has some impressive sea life. Stay warm and dry while viewing the thriving ecosystem on the Glass Bottom Boat. You will learn about the history and preservation of the marine reserve while on the 45 minute tour and occasionally, dolphins, orcas and even whales have been seen to make an appearance! If you're feeling brave, you can get in the water and go for a snorkel, but we suggest saving that for another roadtrip during the summer months.
Goat Island Marine Reserve to the Sawmill Brewery - 15 minutes
Back down the road you will find the Sawmill Brewery in Leigh. The Smoko Room (kitchen) is open Wednesday to Sunday from 12pm until 10pm, so whether you are wanting a quick nibble or meal, this is the place to go. For those interested in craft beer and the brewing process, you can take a tour of their brewery where you can see the brewing process in action. At the end of the tour, they'll talk you through all of their beers and give you a little taste.
From here, it's just one hour back to Auckland City. Sawmill is very popular with locals, especially on the weekends, so if you're unable to get a table, the Puhoi Pub is a great backup option.
For those in the Albany area, book Sachintana’s Toyota Raum. With sliding doors, extra spacious interior, it is perfectly suited to a quick escape from the city with the family.
